The 3 events for STEAM ICAC this year are Astronomy, Engineering and Life Sciences. Each team presents their innovation to a qualified judge in their field for 10 minutes at maximum. The teams must also submit a hard-copy of their report to the judges upon entering the presentation room. The teams are not premitted a digital visual aid and will be assessed on their presentation/report as well as other criteria found here. The report must be 10 pages maximum – 1-inch margins, size 12 Times New Roman font, single-spaced.
Judges
Engineering Event Judge
Ajay Galgut – Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering
Life Sciences Event Judge
Dr. Jyoti Majoka – PhD in Biotechnology
Astronomy Event Judge
NuRee Lee – Honours Bachelor of Science
Criteria
Judges evaluate teams on 8 criteria: the STEAM criteria as well as the sustainability and report/presentation criteria.
Science | Is the project effectively solving the problem? How accurately are scientific concepts applied? |
Technology | Has the team made use of technological resources for their planning and construction? |
Engineering | Is the model accurate to the planning? Is the choice of material optimal to the design? Is the model well constructed to support itself structurally? |
Art | How creative is the solution? Is the presentation component unique and engaging? Is the model visually appealing and creatively designed? |
Math | Are components of the model precise and fit together well? Is the construction of the model well calculated? |
Sustainabilty | Are the materials creatively recycled for the construction of the model? Is the model made only of recycled materials and components? |
Presentation/ Report | Is the report properly formatted and organized? Does it show evidence of research? Is the project presented in an engaging and informative style? |
Report Format
- 10 pages maximum (discluding citations) with a maximum word limit of 6000, 1-inch margins, size 12 Times New Roman font, single-spaced
- An experiments section is not needed; however, the procedure needs to include the steps for creating or using the innovation
- The discussion needs to include your scientific thinking and reference concepts you have utilized for your innovation
- A hard-copy of your scientific report must be provided to the judges upon the team’s entrance to the judging room
- Plagiarism is strictly prohibited, point deductions will be made according to the extent of plagiarism
- Images are permitted on the report, but will contribute towards the page limit
Innovation & Presentation
- 10-minute maximum allocated presentation time, no digital visual aids will be provided
- The presentation is expected to be formal with thorough engagement and information
- Any physical visual aid is permitted; however, judges are not allowed to receive items, gifts, or notes of any sort
- The model has a size limit of 50cmx50cmx50cm
- The model does not need to function; however, it should be a representation of the different parts of your innovation (There should be no loose pieces)
- No digital models are allowed; however, the creation of apps and use of coding is permitted along with a physical representation
All criteria is marked out of 5 points except for sustainibilty which is marked out of 8. The highest possible score is 38.
